Planning for Change has experience working with a variety of nonprofit organizations and public agencies. They range from new start-ups to community institutions, from the grassroots to the governmental. YouthBuild (California YouthBuild Coalition)


Based in San Francisco's Mission district, Acción Latina seeks to create positive social change among Latinos and build bridges with other communities on common causes. Planning for Change provided Acción Latina with pro bono assistance on its development of 3-year strategic plan in 2007. Learn more about Acción Latina




In September 2008, Planning for Change conducted a series of focus groups with General Assistance (GA) recipients and Alameda County Social Services Agency staff members to gather ground-level feedback on GA policies and programming. Planning for Change staff, along with two GA recipients, presented research findings to a working group of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. In 2006 UC Berkeley School of Law formed the Berkeley Center for Criminal Justice (BCCJ) to help tackle the most pressing issues in criminal justice. Planning for Change worked with staff to create BCCJ's original strategic plan in 2007 and continues to facilitate "real time" strategic planning feedback for continuous improvement. The W. Haywood Burns Institute is a leading national organization working successfully to reduce the overrepresentation of youth of color in the juvenile justice system. Planning for Change (PFC) began working with the Burns Institute in 2004 to refine its intensive site-based model for reducing racial disparities. PFC subsequently conducted process and outcome evaluations of jurisdictions in Kentucky and Arizona that have implemented the model, and has continued to work with the Burns Institute in a variety of further capacity building projects. Located at UC Berkeley's School of Law, the Center for Clinical Education (CCE) equips law students with hands-on learning experiences while providing the highest-quality legal representation to disadvantaged and underserved groups. The clinics that comprise CCE aim to make significant contributions to the development of the law and legal systems at home and abroad. Planning for Change completed a governance planning project with CCE in August, 2008. Learn more about the Center for Clinical Education


The Center for Young Women's Development (CYWD) is one of the first nonprofits in the United States run and led entirely by young women. The Center offers a vibrant model for linking youth development and youth organizing with the mission of providing gender-specific, peer-based opportunities for high-risk, low- and no-income young women to build healthier lives and healthier communities. A program of the Burns Institute, the Community Justice Network for Youth (CJNY) is a national network of community-based organizations trying to reform the juvenile justice system and stop the school-to-prison pipeline. Planning for Change worked with CJNY staff in 2008-2009 to refine their logic model and update their strategic plan. Learn more about the Community Justice Network for Youth




LDIR (Leadership Development in Interethnic Relations) is a Los Angeles-based leadership development program that works to empower, mobilize and equip multiethnic, multicultural communities and schools with awareness, skills, and the action steps necessary to foster positive and sustainable intergroup relations for social change. LDIR is a program of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California, the nation's largest legal organization serving the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities. Founded in 1983, APALC is a unique organization that combines traditional legal services with civil rights advocacy and leadership development. Planning for Change completed an evaluation of the LDIRs in Health pilot program in 2007 and worked with LDIR stakeholders to develop a five-year strategic plan in 2008. The Bay Area Social Equity Caucus is a coalition of over 75 organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area committed to moving a regional equity agenda. Planning for Change conducted a retrospective evaluation of the Bay Area SEC in 2007 and in 2008 facilitated the creation of their 2008-2009 strategic plan. Urban Habitat founded the Bay Area SEC in 1998 and continues to serve as the coalition's lead organization. Urban Habitat builds power in low-income communities and communities of color by combining education, advocacy, research, and coalition building to advance environmental, economic, and social justice in the Bay Area. In YouthBuild USA programs, low-income young people ages 16-24 build affordable housing and work toward their GEDs or high school diplomas, learning job skills, serving their communities, and transforming their lives in the process. The California YouthBuild Coalition (CYBC) advocates for increased resources, programs, and public involvement for 21 YouthBuild sites across the state.
